5 Stars Love it
This is my first GPS unit (I’m also a very new driver) and I absolutely love this thing. It gives you plenty of warning before you have to turn or switch lanes. It’s very user friendly and the graphics are awesome

5 Stars AWESOME!
Got this from my wife for Christmas because we were getting to my kids hockey games late trying to find the arenas!! The last game was at a rink that I had never been to and the TomTom led us right to the door!! VERY accurate time estimates, VERY easy to use and “hear”. I am also a pro musician and trying to find the clubs we play can be a chore as well. NOT NO MORE!!! Many personal preference settings and small enough to take with anywhere as like a “handheld”. This is my first “automotive” gps unit and the features are GREAT! walking, driving, finding p.o.i.

VERY RECOMMENDED !!!!!

Nice feature to be able to download addresses from Google maps directly to the unit!

4 Stars NO REGRETS!!!
After reading several reviews, I found that almost everyone liked this GPS EXCEPT for the fact that the volume was low. On the contrary, the volume is exceptional; in fact, I actually find myself turning it down. This GPS is everything I was looking for; I would recommend this product to anyone looking for a inexpensive GPS.

5 Stars TOM TOM ONE 130
This is the 2nd TomTom ONE 130 GPS we bought. This was a gift. Very pleased with the GPS- easy to use, accurate and small enough to put in a pocket or purse.

4 Stars This thing ROCKS!
Once you get updated, download the map corrections to, turn it on stick to your window or dash, and your DONE! Volume is great, it warns you early enough before a turn or exit, it even knows how fast you are going! It doesn’t come with ALL the bells and whistles of the way over priced high end models. But it does have everything you need to get from point A to point B without getting lost! Even if you make a wrong turn, TomTom will get you back on track!!

The Maestro 4050 provides real-time traffic alerts, Bluetooth hands-free phone calling capabilities and advanced voiced routing directions via Magellan’s SayWhere text-to-speech function, which audibly announces the street names for upcoming maneuvers. The Maestro 4050 includes a lifetime subscription for real-time premium traffic services with the Magellan TrafficKit, the first completely integrated, portable real-time traffic solution with a no-fuss, wire-free design. The receiver attaches at a cradle with a simple click to help drivers avoid traffic delays with incident alerts and rerouting.Preloaded with full coverage maps of Europe from NAVTEQ, the Maestro 4050 also contains the Marco Polo sight seeing information plus a database of one million additional points of interest (POI) like ATMs, petrol stations and more. The Maestro 4050’s Bluetooth capabilities make it possible for drivers to be connected to a business with a hands-free phone call once a POI is selected. The Maestro 4050 is voice command ready. Drivers will enjoy the latest advances in voice recognition capabilities to control the device and route to their destination using voice commands.

User Ratings and Reviews

4 Stars Another drawback in Magellan Maestro 4050
I bought my Magellan Maestro 4050 about six months ago on Amazon.com. Sofar I am pleased with all the features and its functioning, but still a bit dissatisfied when I was holding my GPS 4050 at point A and tried to get direction from point B to point C. Magellan Maestro does not have that route. So when you have your GPS 4050 in your hand at point A, you can not make a map direction from point B to point C like you can make through Yahoo map or Google map. I don’t know why GPS makers do not think about that?????? Another drawback that sometimes the Bluetooth froze and the touch screen doesnot respond. I have to push a reset on side to make it work.

5 Stars 4050 gets it done
The Magellan Maestro 4050 is the first GPS I have bought. However I have used the Never Lost Hertz rental car GPS on more then one occasion and was looking for a GPS much the same. The 4050 is that unit. It just works and has all the bells and whistles I could want. If it does or doesn’t do something I need or want I haven’t found it yet. Price wise it’s a bucket of bang for the buck. I had to call their support in order to get my free road advisory service and the free extended warranty given to AAA members up and activated. I was unable to accomplish this on line using the CD that comes with the unit or via Magellan’s web site. However customer support had me up and running in no time. Great unit, great price and good support. If your thinking upscale GPS this is a good one.

BW, Florida ……

5 Stars Great GPS!
This is a very handy little gadget. I have had many uses for it already. The amopunt of information contained in this little unit is amazing! Well worth the money.

3 Stars Touch screen problems
I got the Magellen GPS at Costco on a whim for $[...] and returned it the next week. I have had a Garmin for years switched to Magellen for the price. I didn’t like the menus, they did not seem to be the most intuitive but with practice, you’d get to know them.

The real problem is that the touch screen didn’t work well. I’d poke and poke and nothing would happen, usually on the keyboard. So I started reading the reviews and saw several comments about how bad the customer service is at Megellan so I switched back to Garmin.

4 Stars My 1st add on GPS
My other cars all had intergrated GPS. This is my first “portable”. I did not like the mounting hardware supplied with unit, as I did not want it stuck to the windshield. The attached Road condition receiver made a bulky package, but the extra info while traveling made it worthwhile.

I love the voice command. After business is complete in down town, “magellam” “go Home” is all that is needed to route me back home!

One of Garmin’s key product philosophies is, “to make extremely complex technology easy to use for anyone right out of the box,” and perhaps nowhere is that better exemplified than in the user interface for Garmin’s portable navigation devices.

Garmin’s interface is a key to their success and one of the things that makes their devices such a pleasure to use. Simple controls and sub-screens make it easy to enter or search for destinations and get data about your trip.

Usable voice recognition is something we’ve been waiting to see for a long time. Reaching over to type out directions on your GPS isn’t just difficult, it can feel downright dangerous. There’s even a warning on every GPS not to do it. But who has the time to sit still and punch in a destination? Well, now you can have your hurry and your directions too.

The nüvi 800s aren’t the first GPS navigators to offer voice recognition, but the level of flexibility they offer sets a new standard for simple and intuitive use.

The device comes with a little remote control that mounts on your steering wheel. It has two buttons. One is, “listen.” The other is, “stop listening”. Hit the “listen” button to start voice recognition. Then you can speak any of the words that appear on the display, and the device will understand, or you can ask questions based on most points of interest. Say, “find nearest Italian restaurant,” for example, and you’ll get a list of nearby spots. Say “go to” and name of the one you want, and you get turn-by-turn directions to dinner. The nüvi also knows the names of many large business brands, so you can just say, “find place, Starbucks,” if that’s your coffee mojo.

Of course, if you know the address you want to go to, you can say that too, and the nüvi will give you directions, all without having to reach over to the dashboard and touch it.

Speech recognition is available for American English, British English, European French, European Spanish, German, Italian, and Netherlands Dutch languages.

User Ratings and Reviews

4 Stars Consumer GPS still a flawed industry
GPS units have gotten alot cheaper since they first came on the market, and the units have improved dramatically. Unfortunately, no unit is perfect and you still have to be prepared for errors and problems.

The 850 is dark gray/black unit that looks sleek and attractive. It feels sturdy and I like the look and feel of it. The touchscreen is clear and legible and work wells. Garmin has the reputation of having some of the best routing algorithims, the best features, the best maps and the most expensive units. Other brands are catching up though and I’m not sure some of the more expensive Garmin units prices are justified.

The main selling point of this unit is its speech recognition, so that you can verbally enter your address or place name. I have to say, it works pretty well, as long as it is quiet. As long as people are not talking and the radio is off, it can usually understand what you are saying, though sometimes it takes a few tries with certain names. If it all goes smoothly it is slightly faster then tapping it in. It is a nice feature to have but I’m not sure it worth the extra money at this point. The 760 which lacks this feature is otherwise almost identical to this unit and is half as much.

I’ve downloaded pictures and music to my 850, and that is a nice feature. Its fun to be able to pull up pictures or music for the road. However the Garmin’s built in speakers, while acceptable for its direction giving, is awful for playing music. The music volume is low and washed out. They really need to invest in better speakers.

The 850 is the way to go if don’t care about the 880’s MSN direct or other features you have to pay for. I personally don’t think these features work well or are worth the money. Even with their premium price the 800 series don’t come with carrying cases, wall chargers and other goodies, that often cheaper units come with. Further, bigger screen units with more 3D mapping capabilities have begun to the the market.

The biggest problem I’ve had and the reason why this unit is not getting five stars, is sometimes it simply doesn’t work properly. I’ve read that this is a problem in all or most gps devices, but since this is my first unit, I can’t say for sure. I’ve had it for six months and the unit has inexplicably crashed once on me, where I head to turn it off and turn it back on. The real problems though are that sometimes (1) it cannot find your address, (2) it does not route you to the right address and (3) gives you improper directions, ie- tells you to turn the wrong way, etc, and (4) it routes you along an inconvenient and out of the way path. I have experienced all of these problems, and while they are not all the time they happen often enough.

All that said I overall like my unit and it is the best speech recognition unit on currently on the market.

5 Stars PERFECT!
Loved this product! I bought it as a christmas gift for my fiance who originally wanted a Garmen 750… and in searching the internet I found an updated version from that! The voice recognition is great! And it comes with preloaded maps! He LOVES it!

5 Stars Awesome Product
This unit is an awesome product. Just received it as a Christmas Gift from my lovely wife. The ease of its use is a major plus. The only thing I would add would be bluetooth.

5 Stars Garmin nuvi 850 – The Best!
The Gamrin Nuvi 850, is simply the best! It basically saved my job! I am a truck driver and I recently got transferred to a new city and without it, I would be lost! Simple to use and easy to see. This is my first GPS system, so I cannot compare it to others but, I am completely 100% satisfied with the Garmin 850.

5 Stars Great product!
This GPS works just as described. No problems whatsoever. Fast, accurate, and easy to operate. My one criticism is that Garmin should include a carrying case with this higher end model.

4 Stars Tom Tom One XL – Not too bad
The Tom Tom One XL is very good! Used it for the first time a couple weeks ago. I had really foggy weather driving at night and could really see well and the Tom Tom helped navigate me through towns I wasn’t familiar with. However, the I did find that the map update wasn’t all that good in the rural areas that had put in wider and straighter highways. It was still directing me to the old road locations that no longer existed or took me to old locations that went through tiny streets and towns only to come back to the same highway at the other end. It did not pickup addresses well on military installations where I seemed to struggle the most (Ft Benning, GA)driving in circles. And the bluetooth wasn’t compatible with my phone which I didn’t know until I opened the box read the instructions. Might have been more helpful it that was located as part of the specs. Nonetheless, for only $99 I received a good product and it still managed to get me to my locations with just a little struggle where I was going in blind.

4 Stars VERY NICE!!!!
I really like this tomtom gps its great! Very fast shipping.. it arrived to my house in 3 day’s! I think it was a good buy & it does the job. Everything works so far so good & looks brand new, but i didnt recieve the disk or the data chip that i was told would come with the gps. Over all im happy with what i paid for & would recommend to anybody to buying this tomtom gps

5 Stars Amazon reliable and fast
I purchase a tomtom one it was exacly what i saw in the picture when i was going through the pages.. I told all my friends and family about amazon. they are quick and easy.

5 Stars Tom Tom GPS
I absolutely love my Tom Tom. It gives me a lot of peace of mind to know it will deliver me right to my destination.

5 Stars Thrilled with my TomTom
Arrived in perfect condition, would have never known it was a refurb, except for the box. Great value.

User Ratings and Reviews

4 Stars Our new BFF!
I bought this TomTom for my husband. It is a life saver! Just be sure and spell the names of the streets correctly! haha. You can avoid a fight and save yourself of wrongly accusing the TomTom of poor quality! Easy to understand, has many features, and great investment if you spend alot of time on the road!

1 Star Poor Performance
just bought (and am returning) the TomTom 730T for poor performance. It failed the numerous simple tests I gave it – it could not give correct directions. At the end of the directions, it wanted me to drive in the opposite direction. On a recent road trip – 20 miles out side of my destination – it wanted me to veer off and turn right and proceed in an uncharted destination. If I didn’t already know the terrain, and ignored it, I would have never arrived at my destination. Not to mention, it couldn’t even figure out the time of day. It could always correctly identify my location, but couldn’t get me the correct time nor lead me to my destination. If I can’t trust it for known locations, how can I possibly trust it to guide me through unknown destinations? Not only poor performance, but scary. Additionally, there is no support whatsoever. You are you’re own – I’m just glad I bought it from Amazon, who never fails.

1 Star Did not buy this…
The advertised item was the TomTom 720T. The vendor then told me he had to catergorize a 720 as a 720T because there was no cetergory for his 720. I was prepared to pay $320 for a 720T but one can find a 720 for less than $200, so I passed on the purchase.

5 Stars Simply The Best
Text to speech is pretty good, sometimes you have to peek at the device to really know the street name, however most of the time you can keep your eyes on the road, just the way it should be. It’s nice to have my SMS messages read to me while I drive and Thomas as I call him can even pair to my phones data connection to download traffic info for free. Overall an amazing device.

1 Star Very Disappointing
I received this as a Christmas gift – and I have already sent it back and will replace it with a Garmain. Too bad, it could have been great. I tested it for over week, and NOT ONE TIME did it give me correct directions! It would be okay, identifiy my location and all – but the last directions would send me spinning out in the OPPOSITE direction – EVERY TIME. Whether it be to work, to home – the clencher was a road trip – if I didn’t know where I was going, TomTom would have gotten me lost but good – I had to ignore the directions! I cannot trust it at all. Mind you, I updated with current maps and everything – to no avail. I cannot keep a navigator I cannot trust. Bye bye Tom Tom.

1 Star i cannot believe it
I travel to Europe once a year and this unit looked like great and not so expensive option. Well …

1. The ‘integrated’ traffic is in car charger and you have to use additional cable which plugs into car charger – it’s so messy.

2. What is worse, the unit does not work anymore. I plugged it to my PC and followed the installation upgrade – after it was done the screen went blank and flickrs like bad frequency TV monitor and my PC does not recognize the GPS anymore.

thank you Garmin for great useless tool I have to return back to Amazon, I’m leaving for a week vacation in couple days, I guess I will have to stick with old printed map again.

little update few hours later… Amazon shipped another unit overnight for free !! This is the best customer service I’ve ever seen. I hope I will have more luck with the second unit.

1 Star Very disappointed
I went through a couple of iterations of this unit until I got one that was utterly disappointing. The first unit didn’t work having a blank screen. I returned it for a new unit and began testing it. Forget about listening to the radio if you want to hear any alerts. The speaker is cheap and it makes the voice difficult-to-understand, rendering the speaker useless. The bluetooth was not worth it since the callers could not understand what I was saying. The traffic monitor did not work either. I specifically drove towards a traffic tie-up to see what options it would suggest. NOTHING…. And, yes, you must have it plugged in since the traffic receiver is located in the cord.

I would not recommend this at all. I do believe it’s a mass-produced, expensive piece of junk.

Rutilia.

5 Stars Great tool when traveling abroad
I purchased this device a few weeks ago in anticipation of a trip to the UK. I’ve driven there before, navigating with the excellent AA road atlases, but being an American driving a right hand drive car with a manual transmission, sometimes in bad weather, I would often get task-saturated. I thought a GPS or “Sat Nav” as they call them, would make the job a little easier.

The only features that I really needed in a GPS unit were the U.S and European maps and text-to-speech, (”turn left on High street”), beyond that, additional whistles and bells didn’t matter to me.

Initially I looked at both Garmin and TomTom and decided to go with Garmin since it was less expensive to find a unit that had North American and European maps. I paid about $270 for my 275T, it was the least expensive unit that had European maps pre-installed. Buying the European map separately would cost you approximately $150 and the UK-only map runs about $99.

The 275T operation is fairly straight forward. It has all of the normal features that one would expect to find on a modern GPS unit to include a fairly robust POI (Point Of Interest) database loaded with gas stations, restaurants, airports etc… The touch screen works well and although the size is smaller, (3.5″ vs 4.3″ on some larger units), it was more than adequate to display all of the necessary information. The voice directions are very helpful, especially when driving in heavy traffic. Traffic updates in the US arrive via an FM transmitter in the charger cord, (in Europe you have to plug in an antenna wire which comes with the unit). You can also easily preload lots of destinations to your “favorites” on the device by using the Google map or Panoramio photo websites.

In the UK the 275T proved to be invaluable; you feel much freer to stray from the beaten path and do a bit of exploring knowing that your GPS will always get you to your appointed destination. The time to destination estimates were accurate and the routes were efficient. When initially turned on, the unit located satellites quickly and never lost the connection except when in parking garages, or tunnels. Sometimes when surrounded by lots of tall buildings, like in downtown London, the unit would appear to get confused about the direction in which it was pointing. Moving the car just a few dozen feet or so normally corrected this. The included Europe maps were very accurate with the exception of a new stretch of highway between Falkirk and Edinburgh which was not included on the map database. Road names, one-way streets, and parking areas were all up to date. I found the inclusion of “safety camera” locations, (read: “speed trap cameras”), to be very helpful; it even flashed a red warning when you exceed the speed limit in an area with a camera.

The only feature that I sometimes wish was included was a compass heading. If you just turn on the unit, but don’t program in a destination, your directional heading, (North, East etc…), is displayed in the lower right hand corner. However when it’s giving you directions, your estimated time to arrival takes up that area of the screen. Overall however, I thought the unit was great and I would recommend the 275T if your travels take you between North America and Europe on occasion. Renting a GPS with your car in the UK will typically add about $15 per day; use your 275T for a couple weeks and it’s practically paid for itself.

4 Stars Garmin 275T
I am quite pleased with the Garmin nuvi 275T device. It’s routing has generally been good, but when I do disagree, it resets very quickly. The Bluetooth function works very well. I do have two complaints. The first is that when you plug in a destination, it does not demonstrate a compass heading. Instead it shows the estimated time of arrival. There is a compass heading in the map view, however. Secondly, there is no mechanism to add numbers to the phone book if your cell’s phone book doesn’t automatically sync with the device. This is independent of the Bluetooth function.

4 Stars GPS Garmin Nuvi
I received my Garmin Nuvi 275 T really quickly, However the screen does not appear to be a wide screen 3.5. I am puzzled as to how you get this measurment as the internal screen width measures under 3 inches.????

So I do not know how this is measured to be classed as a wide screen.

I seems to work great. I did not receive the full instructions with it on how to add the blue tooth and may have to get these online and print them which will cost a lot of ink to do that. It is easy to use and so far has taken me to my destinations perfectly.

User Ratings and Reviews

3 Stars Good… but it did mess up
First off, this is a good product but Magellan should either update the maps or provide a free upgrade, Garmin did for my dads Nuvi 650. Okay I used this to go to South Bend, IN from Lafayette, IN I ran into a closed road on the way and it took me there once it rerouted, however it did try to take me down a one way road. On the way home I tried to take I-65 as it directed but it was closed in two places then it rerouted me and got me lost in Gary the murder capital wtf. I was able to reroute for the shortest distance and it took me out into bfe to get to a major highway. Then I encountered another road closing luckly the opposite way I was going to turn took me back on to I-65 where I wanted to go. I only discovered this because I needed gas otherwise I would have been who knows where. Anyway I would like to try the updated maps, I think this would solve some of the reroute problems (obviously the road closings will not show up). Although it did take me all over the place it did get me out of Gary, without I would have been SOL.

4 Stars Pleased!
So far love this product. Actually my fiance is the one I bought it for and so far he loves it. In fact, his dad and two brother-in-laws received GPS’ for Christmas, but a different brand and size, and they all want his! So no complaints here!

4 Stars Useful little gadget
I bought this GPS mainly because of the larger screen this model provides compared to the other ones. Using the gadget and maneuvering between the menus are quite simple – nothing too complicated. I like how they have a trip planner (to save destinations and use them later) and there are countless destinations as POIs also. However, the biggest bother for me was when I noticed that upon start up, it took a while to realize where I was exactly and re-calculate position and route to take.

Pros:

-easy to use menus

-lots of POI’s (although they may need to be updated)

-trip planner to save multiple destinations

-price for the model

Cons:

-took a while to locate position upon start up (up to 30 secs at times)

-does not have text-to-speech capability

-sometimes takes less popular roads, even though I’d prefer them

All in all, I get what I paid for. It comes in very handy when I need it and the cons takes some getting used to, but great product in the end.

4 Stars Magellan Maestro 4000
GPS works well; easy to see and use interface. Upgraded maps will be a plus in late 2008. Great value for the price.

4 Stars Very Good but cheaper at Toy’s R Us
I found the unit to be very good… limited Points of interest, but the really good part is that Toy’s R Us has it for $120 (Clearance).

2 Stars Garmin is better~!
Seriously, if you have any brains you’ll spend a few extra dollars and buy a Garmin. You can get a 265t with free traffic for about an extra $50, and that is money well spent!! The Navigon is plagued with a terrible speaker, made worse by the garbled voice that is installed in the unit. Plus I had the newest maps from Navigon, and it still didn’t have my road on there, despite the road being 2 years old, Garmin had it right out of the box! Garmin has a great speaker, with clear voices, and you can customize just about everything very easily, whereas with the Navigon you have to search on various sites to try and find what you need, and then hope it doesn’t crash the unit when you install it. The “reality view” is a joke, it’s just a generic picture of a skyline with the proper number of road lanes, and it’s a static picture so you can’t even see that you are moving, brilliant move Navigon! I had this for a week and realized why the prices on Navigons drop like a lead balloon just a few months after they are released!

5 Stars Navigon 5100 GPS review
Great buy for the money. I bought one for my parents and one for my daughter and son-in-law. I plugged it in before I gave them as gifts and was pleased with the possible exception that it doesn’t sound like the voice has a very high volume. Hopefully, that won’t be an issue when it is used.

5 Stars Everything delivered as advertised
I am happy with this purchase and would recommend this anyday. I received all the items as listed without any defect.

4 Stars Good product for it’s price
This is a great product from Navigon with lot of pros and few cons

Pros -

1) Realtime view – This is an awesome feature that is only provided by Navigon which shows number of lanes (exactly same as fwy boards), I just love it.

2) Speed limit – Gives a Caution indication to driver if speed is exceeded by 5/10/15/20 miles. (we can set the warning)

3) Turn by turn list – Gives turn by turn with street name with 1/2 mile remaining towards the turn.

4) 2D/3D view – Excellent 2/3D views. We can set Day/Night display mode.

5) Traffic Indication – Excellent feature, saves a lot of time if there is a traffic on FWY and asks if you want to opt for alternative route.

6) POI’s – Number of POI’s to search as well as they are displayed on screen while driving. (This saves time to search).

7) Excellent looks, excellent windshield

Cons-

1) Takes time to start and to load maps. For me it has always shown me insufficient signal when I switch it on. But after 5-7 mins, it’s good to go. So better switch it on sometime earlier.

2) Takes time while recalculating, to display turn by turn list.

3) Tapping on the Screen is not so easy, u have to press hard…i’m not sure but may be I’m still facing that problem

Overall, this is a great product for it’s price. I’m enjoying it.

2 Stars Not as good as I hoped
It is not as helpful as i hoped it would be.

For starters, the POI’s are extremely limited. It did not even find a certain starbucks!

Additionally, I expected it to be able to find places,(based on its name and not an address, i.e. “Carvel”) in a given area, but it is not able to do so.

The input buttons are small and slow.

As for the traffice updates, the one time it picked up a supposed traffic alert on a highway it ended up being incorrect information.

Overall, I’m not so pleased with it.

1 Star Buy Garmin
The voice stopped working a year after I bought the device. When I called for service, I was informed that my warranty expired 2 weeks ago and since they don’t repair their devices, my only option is to buy a new one. I find it highly sketchy my only option is to buy a new device one year after I bought this one. I offered to pay for repairs but they don’t do that; they only replace. Since I have to buy a new device, I think I’ll try Garmin this time.

5 Stars GPS Navigator
I found the item came quickly, the ordering was easy and it was the product I was looking for.

5 Stars Great unit, highly recommended
Real quick, I have had the One XL-S for a year and love it. Not quite as good as my $1900 Honda Odyssey (includes rear camera) but very close. I returned a Navigon 2100Max because of poor POIs and I have ordered a second One XL-S (refurb). That speaks volumes, I looked at Garmin but to get a Garmin widescreen and text to speech was not worth the extra $$. I really like TomTom’s features and function.

The only cons are some retailers missing from the POI database though admittedly I have never updated anything on the unit.

5 Stars Tom Tom xls
Great GPS. It is wonderful in navigation less stress than following a map.

The speaking makes it very easy in following the directions.

Highly recomend it!!

5 Stars TomTom review
This is the second TomTom ONE XL I have purchased. Before the S model came out I bought the original and loved it. It replaced a Garmin I had a lot of problems with. I bought the TomTom ONE XL-S for my dad for Christmas and he loves it. The maps load quickly and get him where he needs to be everytime. I recommend this product. The bluetooth feature is great as well.

User Ratings and Reviews

1 Star Worst most frustrating GPS I have ever used
I have owned 3 avaiation and three road GPS’s and found this one the most difficult UNUSER Friendly in both road and Avaiation modes… I hate it..

3 Stars Great potential with a few issues
I bought a refurbished IPAQ 310 and used two weeks; then returned it. If you bought a new one, your experience may vary.

The unit’s appearance is attractive and in good quality, the screen is bright and big. When I purchased it, I had three expectations:

1. GPS, of course

2. Ebook reader.

3. Multimedia player

The device has potential to fulfill all of them. As a portable media player, it plays avi, divx, mpeg and other type of files. However, you need to install TCPMP to play some types of media files. Playing quality is very impressive, I didn’t notice lost frames or sluggish.

As an ebook reader, you need foxit pdf reader. Currently it is in the first version and the program is not easy to use. but book is still readable and clear. Forget about CHM format. There is no reader for CHM for Windows CE. I probably is writing such a program if I didn’t return the device.

As a GPS, it disappoints me most and is the reason I returned it. I used it three times, only first time it acquired GPS signal. At first, I thought the problem was caused by modification of the software, so I restored it to factory default using HP current patch. It didn’t help. I reset it multiply times without putting any SD card in it, walking in my back yard with no tree blocking the sky. No signal! Another time, I drive to downtown from my house for about half hour. No signal. I didn’t see any switch to turn GPS on or off. So I assume it should be always on.

Based on my experiece, there are a couple of issues preventing the device being a gread gadget:

1. Difficult to acquire GPS signal. This could vary by device. I have no doubt that other units may not have this problem;

2. Using Windows CE as its operating system. In my opinion, this is a big mistake. There is literally no software for Windows CE. This is a lesson I learnt from this device and I would NOT buy another device with Windows CE on it. Before I bought it, I thought Windows CE is a variant of Windows Mobile or Pocket PC version. Big difference! If it runs Windows Mobile, the potential of this device is unlimited.

3. Could not charge it with car charger. I found this on the road. When I saw a warning of low battery, I plugged it with car charger and the device still turned off in 10 minutes and no matter what I tried, I could not turned it back on. The only way to charge it is to use dual power USB cable with both USB ends plugged into USB hub. Apparently, the unit needs higher power provided by single USB cable. The problem is worsened by relatively short battery life. With a full charged battery, I can only play two hours video, then the unit shut off.

The one I bought has product #: FA974AA#ABA. it is not clear whether this is first revision or second. I would suggest you to avoid it if you want to buy refurbished one to save money.

2 Stars Save your money if over $200
I bought it for 199 and got an extra 30 off, but even then the system and maps included and upgradable in US through the HP site is old technology.

The dual core 600 seems misleading- looking further I see 570MHz total and have seen it at 285 (only one core firing up)…I assume it is actually a 300Mhz Dual Core as my 400Mhz Processor in a Mio is seen as 397Mhz and runs much better…

Navigation is built on an IGO8 platform with its own custom Skin and after downloading the 1.7GB HP upgrade the Oasis Interface and system is upgraded along with the IGO8 Software release I believe May 2008, but the majority of the 1.7GB being the Content for navigation remains at the same old Oct 2007 release for maps and poi files.

Back to processor performance – my two sons were playing the same game that is included on the HP and also on the mio, and when they were running a course that is showing 50 seconds at completion, my one son on the mio completed in 57 seconds actual time elapsed, and the one on the HP completed at ~95 seconds time elapsed where screen shows 52 seconds…after a device reset it dropped down to 62, and after the upgrade requires less resets.

The sluggish performance also is apparrent at times with TTS stop and go stutter issues.

The internal Media Player has its quirks, and the system restarts on its own too often when I try to do too much, this is before I added my own additional software…

The reasons I am keeping it is that through the games menu I was able to load my own freeware software TCPMP to play my music and video with much more control and it only has issues with large .mov files it seems, all else play great. I do have to get better video resolution when I convert my files though because the screen is excellent. You can also find much newer releases of IGO8 that are available and release dates in July and September 2008 and Content sets from 01/08 and 2008Q2, and make that software accessible either through the existing menu navigation or alternate within games.

Having this newer release and customization available makes it worth keeping, along with the Screen Resolution – I was almost ready to return it.

I put a 16GB SDHC in it and works great- I’m ready to sell my 30GB Media Players now…

4 Stars Good GPS, But Needs Improvements
It has a bright huge 4.3″ screen. And it is the most important reason that I have bought this unit. However, sometime the system will halt during turning on, and I have to restart it. In Atlanta area, the map is not accurate and sometime misleading.

1 Star Returned it twice.
I bought this device a year ago but I am writing a review now. I had problems from the start with the HP 310 GPS. It would always freeze up so I returned it than the last one would no longer charge. This was all in about a months time. I now have a different device.

Pros= nice screen.

Cons= I am pretty good at working these devices but I had problems with this one. One thing I did not like was the street that you were on would not stay visible when the device was on and not navigating, and when navigating it was not there just the next turn. To make the street you are on appear you had to tap the screen, that means not concentrating on the road. That is how accidents happen. The MIO 610 is every thing the HP 310 is supposed to be and more. The MIO 520 has the same size screen. The MIO 610 displays on that little screen the street you are on and the road you need to turn to without fiddling with the device while you are driving.

I only paid $199.99 and it still was not worth that with all the problems.

                  Buy/More Info
